Hi there! I'm Karen Gardner, owner of Rockrose Nonprofit Services.
In 20+ years of working with nonprofits, my career has spanned program and development roles for a wide variety of causes - including education, environment, basic human needs, social justice, health care, and more. I've worked for international organizations with large development departments, and I've supported small teams with no development staff. From coordinating annual funds to securing 7-figure contracts, I've raised millions to support the work that makes our world a better place.
In addition to my nonprofit service, I have also taught grant writing through Sonoma State University's Master of Public Administration program.
I specialize in development planning, copywriting, grants management, and coaching. Based in Santa Rosa, California, I am proud to serve nonprofits both locally and globally.
My work is rooted in a commitment to equity, and I am passionate about community centric fundraising - helping nonprofits secure resources that advance both organizational success and build a more just and inclusive world.

Hi! I'm Skylar Mittlestead, Grants Management Support Coordinator at Rockrose Nonprofit Services.
I’ve spent the last six years working in the nonprofit world, where I’ve had the chance to support causes I care deeply about, specifically animal welfare, though my heart is in many places. My background started in community outreach, and has since grown to include grant research and management.
At Rockrose, I help with everything from researching new grant opportunities to drafting proposals. I love the behind-the-scenes work that helps nonprofits keep moving forward, especially when it involves highlighting small details or connecting with people.
I earned my B.A. in Communications and Media Studies from Sonoma State University, and I’m currently working toward my Master of Public Administration with a concentration in Nonprofit Management. Originally from the Central Valley, I now call Santa Rosa home.
What drives me most is the belief that actions can lead to lasting change. Whether it’s helping one organization secure the funding they need or helping create more space for kindness in the world, I’m here for it.
Outside of work, you'll usually find me cuddling my two cats or planning my next travel adventure!
